Behind the Scenes: A Moody Garden Wedding at a Luxury Hotel
When guests stepped into the Pacific Promenade Ballroom at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, they were instantly swept into a luxurious moody garden—dramatic, romantic, and completely unforgettable. Designed to celebrate the marriage of NFL quarterback Jordan Love and professional volleyball player Ronika Stone, this stunning Southern California wedding was more than an event, it was an immersive experience.
But behind the candlelight, chic velvet draping, and thousands of florals, there was a wild 12-hour installation that began before the sun came up.
The original plan called for setup to begin the day before the wedding. But with another celebration in the space and Encore unable to strike rigging and cabling until 5:00 a.m. on the morning of, the entire timeline was compressed. No panic — just precision. The team at The Wife of the Party, along with Butterfly Floral, Create Event Design, and rental partners MTB Rentals, Soirée 8, and Rental Ave, assembled an expert crew of 75 professionals, all ready to build a full-scale event from the ground up in record time.
The transformation began with the floor: the ballroom was fully carpeted in a plush cream, softening the space and setting the tone for what would become a luxury wedding reception like no other. Layers of green velvet draping added rich, moody depth to the room, creating visual drama and anchoring statement design moments — like the chandeliers floating above the sweetheart table.
The florals were nothing short of extraordinary. Butterfly Floral worked with over 30,000 stems to bring this romantic wedding design to life. The ballroom bloomed with 5,000 “Playa Blanca” roses, 2,500 “Candlelight” roses, 1,500 “Antonia” roses, and 900 “Vendella” roses. One of the bride’s personal favorites — the 1,400 “Cream de la Cream” roses — made a featured appearance, adding softness and elegance throughout the space. Romantic tones continued with 1,400 butterfly ranunculuses in blush, white, and peach, and 1,000 peach ranunculuses tucked into layered installations.
Fluffy lisianthus in white and blush, delicate poppies, and garden spray roses (4,000 stems strong) in white and yellow created moments of surprise on tabletops, around trees, and in entry pieces. Eight-hundred peonies in white and blush and a massive base of 5,000 white hydrangeas gave volume, contrast, and texture to each arrangement.
But it wasn’t just about the tables. A dramatic suspended floral ceiling installation suspended above the custom monogrammed dance floor, built from 800 Oncidium orchids and 1,000 pepper berry branches, all carefully rigged to create an airy, dreamlike canopy. Across the ballroom, showcased four custom-built “trees” appeared to grow from the ground itself, their trunks wrapped in florals and branches, blurring the line between structure and nature within the indoor space.
Luxurious ivory linens draped every table. Gilded flatware, cut-crystal glassware, and hundreds of varied-height candles added sparkle and glow, creating a soft ambiance that shifted throughout the evening.
All of this — the carpet, the florals, the velvet, the lighting, the ceiling, the trees — was installed in just 12 hours! It was a magnificent sight and so satisfying to have accomplished this lofty task.
